The project work I've been doing for a long-term client. The project started as a top-down MMO, but the scale had to be reigned in, causing the art-style to accommodate a more J-RPG gameplay style.
The focus of the combat animations was to make flashy, readable animations that could be reused as much as possible whilst still being varied enough to make unique combos to allow every action to feel unique. This allowed me to produce animations at a rapid pace whilst maintaining quality and consistency. A lot of the environmental art is prebought assets the team had before bringing me on. To keep within budget, they wanted me to create characters and animations that would fit in with the environments, so I had to work to an established art style. I went for quite a high-contrast, vibrant palette for the characters to allow them to pop against the darker, more grim environments.
